Subtle expressions are the very “mini” expressions that often appear in just one region of your face, such as the brows, eyelids, cheeks, nose, or lips. They can occur when a person is trying to conceal a strong emotion — subtle expression can leak, exposing the true emotion in a tiny change in expression. These small movements may also occur when an emotion is just beginning, often before the person is aware of their emotional state.

Facial Action Coding System

Facial Action Coding System (FACS)[1] is a system for taxonomizing human facial expressions, originally developed by Paul Ekman and Wallace Friesen in 1976 through the pioneering studies of Dr. Carl-Herman Hjortsjö [2]. FACS underwent a slight revision in 2002, in which the contribution of Dr. Joseph Hager stands out. It is a common standard for systematically categorizing the physical expression of emotions, and has been useful to psychologists and animators. The pioneering F-M Facial Action Coding System 2.0 (F-M FACS 2.0)[3] was created in 2017 by Dr. Freitas-Magalhães[4], and presents 2 thousand segments in 4K, using 3D technology and automatic recognition in real time. Meanwhile, the pioneering F-M Facial Action Coding System 3.0 (F-M FACS 3.0®)[5] was created in 2018 by Dr. Freitas-Magalhães[6], and features 4,000 segments in 4K, using 3D, 360 3D, and automatic and real-time recognition technology (FaceReader 7.1). F-M FACS 3.0 features 8 pioneering Action Units (AUs) and 22 pioneering Tongue Movements (TMs), in addition to a functional and structural nomenclature.

Since 2003, F-M Group International (F-MGI) has had a FACS Certification program for professionals who wish to become FACS Certified Coders (F-M Group International FACS Certified Coders, F-MGIFCC).
